🌊 In Deep Water — Holding A Future in a Land That Wasn’t Yet Home
In Deep Water” is a piece I created to honour the quiet, unspoken bravery of mothers who rebuild their lives far from the places that shaped them. It speaks to the emotional tide of starting again — not just in a new landscape, but in a new identity, a new rhythm, a new version of home.
The mother in this painting sits steady in unfamiliar waters. Even when the world feels foreign, she holds her child with the kind of certainty only love can produce. Her halo glows like a sunrise, representing the knowledge she carries from her own people — the wisdom of her community, her lineage, her ancestors who whisper guidance even across oceans.
Behind her, the blue figures stand as ancestral guardians. They are the memories and teachings that follow her wherever she goes, reminding her of who she is, even when the environment tries to reshape her. Their presence makes her journey less lonely — a reminder that identity can survive movement.
Every line drawn onto her skin becomes a map:
a map of survival,
a map of the places she has been,
a map of the memories she refuses to let the world wash away.
The child in her arms represents a future she is determined to protect. In this moment, she is not just navigating survival — she is moulding possibility. Despite the displacement, despite the cultural disconnection, despite the emotional isolation of a new land, she is building a path where her baby can grow with both roots and wings: rooted in the strength of her homeland, and free to rise within the new world she now stands in.
“In Deep Water” honours mothers who hold their families together in places that still feel unfamiliar — women who create sanctuary from memory, resilience, and relentless love. It is a visual prayer for all the women who start again, not because they want to, but because they must.
Even in deep waters, a mother becomes the shore.
